The Tata Sierra has created a massive buzz in the market. With its unique design, segment-leading wheelbase of 2730 mm, and a promise of luxury, it seems like the perfect SUV. However, before you rush to the showroom with your chequebook, you need to look at the complete picture.

1. Tata Sierra Problems-The Base Variant is Too Basic

The introductory price of Rs 11.5 Lakh sounds attractive, but there is a catch. When you look at what you get for that money, the value proposition drops.

While Tata has done a great job providing safety features like 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, and ESP as standard, they have removed essential comfort features. The base variant does not come with an infotainment screen. Even more surprising is that it does not have any speakers. For a car that costs over Rs 11.5 Lakh, missing out on basic music and display systems is a major disappointment.

2. Rear Seat Space Issues for Three Adults

On paper, this SUV claims to be the widest in the segment. It has a long wheelbase and short overhangs which should result in massive space. For two people at the back, it is indeed very comfortable with excellent legroom even for 6-foot tall passengers.

However, the reality changes when you add a third passenger. Practical testing shows that the shoulder room is tight for three adults. The middle passenger will likely feel squeezed. While the floor is flat, the width is not sufficient for three healthy adults to travel comfortably for long distances.

3. Potential Engine and Transmission Lag

The car comes with multiple engine options, including a 1.5-litre diesel and a new petrol unit. However, the concern lies with the transmission tuning.

The petrol engine is paired with a DCA (Dual Clutch Automatic) transmission. In initial tests, this gearbox felt slightly lethargic. It does not respond as quickly as you would expect from a sporty SUV. If you are an enthusiast who wants instant power delivery, this lag could be a dealbreaker. The diesel engine comes with a torque converter which is smoother, but the petrol DCA might leave you wanting more punch.

4. Weight vs Performance Concerns

Tata cars are known for their heavy, solid build quality. While this is great for safety, it often impacts performance.

The 1.5-litre Naturally Aspirated petrol engine produces 106 PS of power and 145 Nm of torque. Given the heavy weight of the vehicle, this engine might feel underpowered, especially on highways or when the car is fully loaded with luggage. You might find yourself shifting gears frequently to overtake, which affects the driving experience.

5. Ground Clearance is Average

The SUV offers a ground clearance of 205 mm. While this is decent and comes with large 19-inch alloy wheels for stability, it is not the best in the segment.

Competitors like the Honda Elevate offer up to 220 mm of ground clearance. If you drive on very bad roads or face massive speed breakers regularly, that extra clearance makes a difference. The 205 mm clearance is good, but it is not a segment-leading figure.

The Tata Sierra is undoubtedly a strong product with Level 2 ADAS, a stunning design, and a huge 620-litre boot. However, the missing features in the base variant and the potential sluggishness of the petrol automatic are real concerns.

If you are a sedate driver and mostly travel with four people, these Tata Sierra problems might not bother you. But if you want a punchy drive and premium features, you should test drive the higher variants carefully.
