VW ID.4 Total Overhaul Is the Real Story, Not Supercharger Access
A VW ID.4 total overhaul is being planned in response to declining sales, and it’s much bigger news than the brand’s belated access to the Tesla Supercharger network. Volkswagen has finally, after multiple delays, opened up access for its ID.4 and ID.Buzz EVs, adding 25,000 DC fast chargers to their network.
However, this long-overdue update comes at a cost.
- A $200 NACS adapter must be purchased.
- Owners of 2025 models get a $100 rebate.
- The adapter will only become standard on 2026 models.
This move comes more than two years after Ford and over a year after GM made the same switch, leaving VW late to the party.

Why Supercharger Access Isn’t Enough
The ID.4 has had an up-and-down year. After strong initial sales, momentum has faded. Dealers offered discounts over $11,000, production was slowed in September, and the loss of the EV tax credit has crippled its value proposition.

With a starting price of $45,095, the ID.4 is significantly more expensive than a base Tesla Model Y or Ford Mustang Mach-E, without leading the class in any key area.

The 2026 VW ID.4 Total Overhaul
This is why VW is planning a VW ID.4 total overhaul for the 2026 model year, which is far more than a simple facelift. The plan is to completely reinvent the vehicle:
- New Interior: The most criticized features—the haptic-touch controls—are being replaced with physical buttons and knobs for climate and volume.
- New Exterior: The body will be completely redesigned for a “lower and squatter stance,” inspired by the ID. Cross Concept.
- New Name: The vehicle is widely expected to be rebranded as the “ID. Tiguan” to align with VW’s popular, well-known branding.
- New Platform: It will use the upgraded “MEB+” platform for better range and efficiency.
While the new NACS adapter is a convenient stop-gap, it’s clear that VW’s real focus is on the upcoming VW ID.4 total overhaul to truly fix the model’s flaws and make it competitive.
