Volvo XC90 Embraces the All-Black SUV Craze with Stylish Black Edition

Volvo is breathing new life into its decade-old XC90 mid-size luxury crossover by introducing a new Black Edition. This stylish offering is Volvo’s answer to the popular “murdered-out” aesthetic seen in rivals from Audi and Lincoln, bringing a sportier, more aggressive look to one of the most elegant SUVs on the market. The XC90 Black Edition will be available for both plug-in and mild-hybrid models, with an EX30 Black Edition also on the way soon.

A Comprehensive Refresh and a Stylish New Take

The Volvo XC90 underwent a comprehensive refresh for the 2025 model year, which included a modernized design, a revised dashboard layout, a new infotainment display, and a refined suspension. Now, Volvo is enhancing its appeal with the new Black Edition, following similar successful introductions for smaller models like the XC60.

  • Sportier Aesthetic: The Black Edition transforms the XC90 into a sportier iteration, directly competing with rivals like the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 that offer similar dark styling packages.

Unique Exterior and Interior Details for a Striking Look

The all-black aesthetic beautifully complements Volvo’s typically restrained and elegant design language.

  • Exterior Enhancements:
    • A high-gloss black finish is applied to key exterior elements, including the grille, the iconic “iron mark” badge, all rear badges, and the wheels.
    • While Onyx Black was previously the exclusive paint color for Volvo Black Editions, the XC90 Black Edition offers more contrast options, including Crystal White, Denim Blue, and Vapour Grey, catering to diverse preferences.
  • Interior Refinements:
    • The cabin features two distinct all-black environments.
    • Both options include charcoal headlining and sophisticated checkered aluminum decors.
    • The charcoal seats can be chosen in a selection of two premium material options, further enhancing the luxurious feel.
    • As Erik Severinson, Chief Commercial Officer at Volvo Cars, noted, “Following clear demand from our customers, we are expanding our line-up of Black Edition cars, adding the XC90. There’s now a timeless and confident-looking Black Edition for our customers in all sizes.”

Volvo’s Black Editions Follow a Wider Industry Trend

Volvo’s expansion of its Black Edition lineup aligns with a broader industry trend where darkened aesthetic packages prove highly popular, particularly in the SUV segment.

  • Growing Black Edition Family: With existing Black Editions for the XC60, EX40, XC40, and EC40 (formerly C40 Recharge), and the upcoming EX30 Black Edition, Volvo will soon offer six distinct Black Edition models.
  • Competitive Landscape: Rivals such as the Audi Q7 offer a Black Optic Package that darkens exterior trim, and Lincoln’s Aviator can be upgraded with the similar Jet Appearance Package. Volvo’s Black Edition goes a step further by also darkening interior trimmings, offering a more comprehensive “murdered-out” look.
  • Pricing Expectation: Based on the XC60 Black Edition’s premium of approximately $11,000 over the base XC60, a similar premium can be expected for the XC90 Black Edition.

While the UK market will see XC90 Black Editions in Plus, Plus Pro, and Ultra trims, the US-spec XC90 Black Edition is yet to be confirmed. However, given the popularity of this aesthetic in the US, an introduction is highly anticipated, offering American buyers one of the most stylish mid-size SUVs available.
