Volvo EX90 2026: A Major Update to Fix a Rocky First Year

The Volvo EX90, the company’s flagship electric SUV, is getting a significant update for the 2026 model year. After a rocky first year plagued by software issues, Volvo is hoping to put these problems behind it with a slew of new features and technologies. The new EX90 will come with a new 800V (Volt) electric system and more computing power, which is designed to fix the buggy software and enhance both safety and performance.

Faster Charging and More Power

The new 800V architecture is a major upgrade from the previous 400V system. This new system not only reduces heat during charging but also allows for much faster charging speeds. Volvo claims that just 10 minutes of charging can add as much as 155 miles of range. The new system also delivers more power, improving the EX90’s acceleration, which was already a quick 4.7 seconds from 0 to 60 mph.

Smarter Tech and Enhanced Safety

The latest EX90 is getting a huge boost in computing power, thanks to a new dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin-based core computer with 500 TOPS of power. This means that safety and performance enhancements can be processed more efficiently via data and AI. The new features include connected safety alerts for slippery roads, automatic e-call with emergency stop assist, and an expanded automatic emergency steering function in dark conditions. The EX90 also gets a new electrochromic panoramic roof that allows for glass transparency adjustment.

A Critical Launch for Volvo

The first model year of the EX90 did not go as planned, leading to scores of frustrated owners. This comprehensive update is meant to remedy that reputational damage and ensure the car’s success. Despite the issues, sales have been strong, with over 2,500 units sold in the USA by the end of August. While pricing for the 2026 model is yet to be announced, the comprehensive updates promise to make the EX90 a much more reliable and attractive luxury electric SUV.
