Toyota Recalls 94,000+ EVs for a Faulty Windshield Defogger
Toyota Motor North America has issued a recall for over 94,000 electric vehicles due to a fault in the HVAC system that can cause the windshield defogger to become inoperative. The recall affects the 2023-2025 Toyota bZ4X SUV, Lexus RZ, and Subaru Solterra EV models, all of which are built on the same platform. The problem, which affects an estimated 100% of the recalled vehicles, is a significant safety concern that can lead to reduced visibility for drivers.

The Problem: A Software Issue
The root cause of the recall is a software issue in the HVAC electronic control unit (ECU). The faulty software can cause the system to enter a “fail-safe mode” under certain conditions, which interrupts the heater function and impacts the vehicle’s defroster. In colder temperatures, this can lead to frost, ice, or fog buildup on the windshield, which can seriously reduce driver visibility and increase the risk of a crash.
The Solution: A Free Software Update
To fix the problem, dealers will update the HVAC system’s electronic control module software and, if necessary, replace any defective electric air conditioning compressors, all free of charge. The owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on October 20.
