Toyota Hilux Electric: Toyota’s Legendary Hilux Is Going Electric
The Toyota Hilux Electric (BEV) is officially coming, as Toyota adds a battery-electric version to the deep and varied lineup of its ninth-generation global pickup. The Toyota Hilux, the world’s most famous pickup (outside North America), will now sit alongside hybrid-diesel, gasoline, and future hydrogen fuel-cell versions, reinforcing Toyota’s “multi-pathway” approach.

The New Powertrain Lineup
The ninth-generation Toyota Hilux, dubbed the Travo, will offer an unprecedented range of powertrains.
- Toyota Hilux Electric (BEV): The battery-electric Hilux uses a 59.2-kWh lithium-ion battery and twin e-axles delivering permanent all-wheel drive. Toyota says the electric pickup produces 151 lb-ft of torque at the front axle and 198 lb-ft at the rear, with a driving range of around 149 miles (WLTP). Capability remains high, with a 1,576-pound payload and 3,525 kg (7,771 lbs) towing capacity.
- Mild-Hybrid Diesel: A new 48-volt hybrid model will serve as the volume seller in Western Europe, powered by a 2.8-liter diesel engine married to an integrated motor-generator. This version retains a 1-ton payload and 3.5-ton towing capacity.
- Hydrogen Fuel-Cell: Toyota also reiterated that a hydrogen fuel-cell Hilux will join the lineup in 2028, emphasizing its commitment to developing multiple alternative-fuel paths.

2026 Model Year Updates
All Toyota Hilux models for 2026 will be Double Cabs and feature all-wheel drive. The interior takes its cues from the new Land Cruiser, centered around a 12.3-inch digital display and 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen. Wireless charging, connected services, and a revamped Toyota Safety Sense suite are all standard or available, with new features like Proactive Driving Assist, Low-Speed Acceleration Suppression, and an Emergency Driving Stop System.
The Toyota Hilux Electric (BEV) variant is distinguished by dropping the traditional grille in favor of a smooth, aerodynamic front fascia.

Final Thoughts
Toyota’s approach reflects a global strategy: the Toyota Hilux Electric and hybrid models are tailored for Western Europe, while traditional diesel and petrol versions will remain available for markets where charging infrastructure is limited. Unfortunately for US buyers, Toyota has confirmed no Toyota Hilux models are planned for the States, where the Tacoma remains the primary offering.
