Toyota Fortuner discontinued. That’s a shocking sentence to read, but it’s true… in Australia.

In India, the Fortuner is the “System.” It’s the undisputed king of the full-size SUV segment, a smashing sales hit. But in Australia, the Fortuner is a massive sales flop. It’s being crushed by its rivals, and Toyota has finally decided to pull the plug.
This is a fascinating story of a “role reversal,” and it actually tells us a lot about the future of the Fortuner in India.
The Fortuner’s Massive Failure in Australia

In India, we buy the Fortuner and Innova like crazy, while the Hilux pickup truck is a rare sight. In Australia, it’s the total opposite. They love the Hilux, but they just don’t buy the Fortuner.
Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales, Sean Hanley, has officially confirmed they are stopping sales of the Fortuner in 2026 after 11 years.
Why? The sales numbers are brutal. The Fortuner is not just being beaten; it’s being embarrassed by the Ford Everest (the SUV we knew as the Endeavour) and the Isuzu MU-X. Even Toyota’s own more expensive Land Cruiser Prado sells almost 10 times more.

Australian SUV Sales (Jan – Oct 2025)

Why Is It a Flop There But a King Here?
This is a simple story of market choice.
In Australia, the Land Cruiser Prado is not that much more expensive than the Fortuner (about ₹3.5 lakh difference). Most buyers just save a little more and get the “real” Land Cruiser. The Fortuner is stuck in the middle.
In India, the Fortuner is the “Land Cruiser” for the masses. Its main rival, the Ford Endeavour, left the market, giving the Fortuner a total monopoly. We don’t have the same love for pickup trucks as Australia, so the Hilux isn’t an option for most families.

So, Will the Fortuner Be Discontinued in India?

No. Absolutely not.
In India, the Fortuner is the market. The news from Australia means nothing for us, except for one exciting thing: a new Fortuner is definitely coming.
The Australian Toyota Fortuner is being phased out without a replacement. But here in India, we expect an all-new Fortuner soon, likely based on the recently unveiled Hilux Travo (a new version of the Hilux). We expect this new model to get a new face, a completely new interior, and the same powerhouse 2.8L Turbo Diesel engine.
Conclusion
The news that the Toyota Fortuner Discontinued is shocking, but it’s only an Australian story. It shows how different markets can be.
For Indian buyers, there is nothing to worry about. The “System” is safe. In fact, a new and even better one is just on the horizon.
