Recent spy shots have captured the new SUV testing on Indian highways for the first time. The test mules were spotted near the Renault-Nissan manufacturing plant in Oragadam, Chennai. This is a massive development because it confirms that local testing has begun in earnest.

While the car was heavily covered in black camouflage, the shape is unmistakable. The spy images reveal a vehicle that looks identical to the global model. You can clearly see the squared-off wheel arches, the flat bonnet, and the rugged roof rails. Even through the disguise, the Y-shaped LED daytime running lights are visible, which is a signature design element of this new generation.

What Does “Finally in India” Mean for You?

Seeing the car on Indian roads changes everything. It means the wait is entering its final phase.

First, it confirms that Renault is tuning the suspension for our specific road conditions. The Indian market requires a suspension setup that can handle potholes and bad roads, something the original Duster was famous for.

Second, it validates the launch timeline. With road tests happening right now in late 2025, the official launch date of January 26, 2026, looks locked and confirmed.

Third, it proves that production will be local. Since the test mules were found near the Chennai factory, it is clear that Renault is gearing up to manufacture the car here. This is great news for pricing, as local production helps avoid high import taxes.

The Reality Check

The most important takeaway from these spy shots is that Renault is not watering down the design for India. Sometimes, manufacturers change the design to save costs, but that does not seem to be the case here.

The test mule has the same imposing road presence as the “Bigster” concept that went viral a few years ago. It looks significantly more muscular and premium than the old Duster. If you were worried that the Indian version would look different from the European one, you can rest easy. The beast that is testing in Chennai is the real deal, and it is coming for the segment leaders very soon.
