Big News: Tata Harrier and Safari Petrol Launch Set for Dec 9!

Tata Motors is finally fixing the biggest gap in its premium SUV lineup. The Tata Harrier and Safari Petrol engine option is officially set to launch on December 9, 2025.

For years, the Harrier and Safari have been “diesel-only” SUVs. This was a problem because their biggest rivals, the Mahindra XUV700 and Scorpio-N, both offer cheaper petrol engine options. This new launch is a direct attack on Mahindra and will make Tata’s flagship SUVs much more affordable.

What is This New Petrol Engine?

This isn’t just any engine; it’s a brand new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine with direct injection. Tata has reportedly been developing this “Hyperion” series engine for over five years.

It’s very powerful, making 170 PS (a measure of power) and 280 Nm of torque (a measure of pulling power). This means it has the same power as the current 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is very impressive. It will be offered with both manual and automatic gearboxes.

This new engine will first launch in the all-new Tata Sierra on November 25. The Sierra will also get a 1.5-litre NA (Naturally Aspirated, or non-turbo) engine for its entry-level models, but this weaker engine will not be available with the Harrier and Safari.

The Other Big Story: A New Deal with Jeep?

This is where the news gets really interesting.

Right now, Tata buys its 2.0-litre diesel engine from Stellantis (the company that owns Jeep). That same engine is used in the Jeep Compass.

But Jeep has a problem: they stopped selling their petrol engine in the Compass and Meridian in 2023 due to new emission rules. They are now diesel-only, just like Tata was.

This new 1.5L Tata petrol engine is expected to be built in the same factory as the Stellantis diesel engine. The big rumour is that Tata might start selling this new petrol engine back to Jeep. This would be a perfect fit for the Compass and Meridian, giving them a much-needed petrol option again.

Conclusion

The Tata Harrier and Safari Petrol launch is a huge strategic move.

First, it makes the Harrier and Safari “more accessible” (cheaper to buy), allowing them to fight the Mahindra XUV700 directly. Second, it opens the door for a powerful partnership with Jeep, where both companies can share engines and save costs. This is a smart, win-win move for Tata.
