Smart 2 EV Successor Testing in China: What We Know

Smart 2 EV Successor Testing Begins: The Fortwo Returns

The brand that defined the “micro-car” segment is going back to its roots. Smart has officially started the Smart 2 EV successor testing phase in China. This new model is designed to replace the iconic Fortwo, a car that was famous for fitting into the smallest parking spots but struggled to succeed in markets like the US.

Now, with a new strategy and modern technology, Smart is rethinking the city car for a global audience.

Reinventing the City Car Formula

The original Smart Fortwo left the market because buyers shifted toward larger SUVs and long-range electric vehicles. However, Smart believes there is still a place for an ultra-compact vehicle, provided it has the right technology.

The new #2 is being built on an all-new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). While the engineers are currently using old Fortwo bodies as test “mules” to hide the new design, the company promises the final product will stay true to the original’s tiny dimensions.

Mercedes-Benz Design Influence

One of the most exciting details is the design team. Smart confirmed that Mercedes-Benz is handling both the exterior and interior styling. This ensures that while the car will be small, it will likely feature a premium, luxury feel inside.

The #2 is not arriving alone. It will join a rapidly expanding lineup that includes the #1, #3, and #5 SUVs. Smart is also planning a sedan called the #6.

This diverse portfolio shows that Smart is no longer just a “tiny car company.” They are adapting to market demands by offering SUVs and sedans while keeping the spirit of the original Fortwo alive with the new #2.

Expected to debut in late 2026, the #2 will likely compete with other premium small EVs like the Fiat 500e. While testing is currently happening in China, the car is confirmed for a European release, with other global markets to follow.
