Skoda & Volkswagen August 2025 Sales: Kylaq Shines for Skoda, VW Faces Downturn
The Indian passenger vehicle market experienced a decline in August 2025, largely due to customers anticipating the new GST tax structure set to take effect. While most automakers saw reduced sales, Skoda Auto India managed to post an impressive 79% year-on-year (YoY) increase, primarily driven by its new compact SUV, the Kylaq. In contrast, Volkswagen India faced a significant setback, with all its models experiencing lower demand.
Skoda’s Performance: Kylaq Leads the Charge
Skoda Auto India recorded total sales of 4,971 units in August 2025. This marked a substantial 79% YoY growth from 2,772 units in August 2024, despite a 10% month-on-month (MoM) decline from July. The Skoda Kylaq was the star performer, accounting for 3,099 units, or 62% of Skoda’s total sales. However, even the Kylaq saw an 8% MoM dip.
Other Skoda models faced challenges:
- Slavia: Sales dipped by 10% YoY and 14% MoM to 1,008 units.
- Kushaq: Sales declined by 47% YoY and 12% MoM to 789 units. A mid-life upgrade is expected soon.
- Kodiaq: Sales fell to just 75 units, a 48% YoY and 29% MoM decline.
Skoda is also preparing to launch the new Octavia RS as a completely built-up unit (CBU) by November, positioning it as a more affordable premium option against rivals like the BMW 330i M Sport and Mercedes-AMG A35.
Volkswagen’s Struggles: Virtus and Taigun See Double-Digit Declines
Volkswagen India experienced a tough August, with total sales dropping to 2,719 units. This represents a 24% YoY de-growth and a 15% MoM decline. Every model in VW’s portfolio saw reduced demand.
- Virtus: Sales fell by 11% YoY and 7% MoM to 1,674 units, though it remained VW’s best-selling model.
- Taigun: Suffered a significant 39% YoY and 25% MoM decline, selling 1,001 units.
- Golf: Sales dropped to just 36 units, a 40% MoM de-growth.
- Tiguan: Saw a sharp 89% YoY and 71% MoM dip, with only 8 units sold.
Combined Performance and Outlook
Combined, Skoda & Volkswagen (part of the Volkswagen Group) recorded total sales of 7,690 units in August. This was a YoY growth from 6,349 units in August 2024, largely thanks to the Kylaq’s strong performance, but showed an MoM decline from 8,775 units in July 2025. The market is hopeful that the clarity on the new GST tax structure and upcoming festive offers will revitalize sales in the coming months for both brands.
