The Nissan GT-R is often called “Godzilla” for its monstrous performance, but the special edition GT-R50 is something entirely different. It is a work of art. Created to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of both the GT-R nameplate and the legendary coachbuilder Italdesign, this vehicle is one of the rarest Japanese cars ever made. Recently, a behind-the-scenes look revealed the secrets of the Nissan GTR50 Italdesign hand-built production.

A Masterclass in Craftsmanship

Unlike modern supercars that are assembled by robots on a high-speed line, the Nissan GTR50 Italdesign hand-built production relied on old-school skills. The team in Italy did not use automated machinery to shape the body. Instead, they used traditional tools like hammers and chisels to form the panels by hand.

The design process started with clay modeling, allowing engineers to reshape the standard R35 GT-R Nismo into something sleeker and more organic. The roofline was lowered by 54 mm (2.1 inches), and the C-pillar was redesigned to improve airflow. To ensure perfection, the team combined these manual techniques with high-tech tools like 3D scanners and CAD software.

Performance That Matches the Looks

While the exterior is Italian elegance, the heart is pure Japanese engineering. The collaboration resulted in a machine that is significantly more powerful than the car it is based on.

The massive boost in power came from larger turbochargers, upgraded intercoolers, and strengthened internal components. This ensures the car drives as aggressively as it looks.

A Rare Collector’s Item

The original plan was to build 50 units, but production issues and the global pandemic meant that only 18 examples were completed. This scarcity has turned the Nissan GTR50 Italdesign hand-built production run into an instant legend.

With a price tag of around $1.2 million, every unit was sold before production even began. As Nissan officially ends production of the R35 GT-R after an 18-year run, the GT-R50 stands as the ultimate farewell to an automotive icon.
