Mitsubishi’s New Flagship SUV Confirmed; Montero Revival Likely
A Mitsubishi new flagship SUV is officially on the way, with the company confirming a launch is set for the end of next year. This comes after years of speculation following the discontinuation of the brand’s iconic Montero (also known as Pajero or Shogun) in 2021.
While the vehicle is confirmed, Mitsubishi is remaining tight-lipped on one crucial detail: its name.

What We Know About the Mitsubishi New Flagship SUV
Speaking to the Australian site Drive, Mitsubishi Australia’s General Manager of Product Strategy, Bruce Hampel, confirmed the vehicle’s timeline. “We will have a new flagship large SUV at the end of next year,” Hampel said. “We haven’t announced the naming yet.”
Hampel added that more details would be shared within the next six months. Based on spy shots and reports, the Mitsubishi new flagship SUV is expected to be a rugged, truck-based, ladder-frame vehicle, marking a return to the roots of the original Montero.

Will It Be Called Montero or Pajero?
While the name is unannounced, “Montero” or “Pajero” are the clear front-runners. The Montero name was recently filed as a trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office, a strong hint that a revival is planned. The nameplate is celebrated globally, thanks in part to Mitsubishi’s legendary success in the Dakar Rally with the Pajero Evolution.

There is also speculation that this new model could consolidate Mitsubishi’s lineup. The brand still produces the smaller, truck-based Montero Sport (or Pajero Sport), which is also due for a replacement. It’s possible this new flagship SUV will merge the two lines into one highly capable global model.
This Mitsubishi new flagship SUV could be the image-boosting vehicle the brand needs, especially in markets like North America and Europe where its lineup has grown slim. A return to building “cool stuff” like a rugged, off-road-capable SUV might be the ticket.
