Mid-Size SUV Sales Slump in August; Mahindra, Tata Show Key Strengths
The mid-size SUV segment (4.4m–4.7m) saw a sharp decline in August 2025, with total sales falling 22.05% YoY to 23,413 units. This slowdown, which also marked a 19.15% MoM drop, was largely due to customers anticipating the GST 2.0 price cuts that became effective in September. However, despite the overall market contraction, Mahindra dominated the top spots, and Tata showed impressive month-on-month growth.
Mahindra Dominates, But Sales Decline
Mahindra captured the top two spots in the segment with its Scorpio/N and XUV700. The Scorpio/N led with 9,840 units, securing a commanding 42.03% market share, despite a significant 28.63% YoY decline. The XUV700 followed, selling 4,956 units, but it suffered an even sharper 44.98% YoY decline, highlighting that even segment leaders were not immune to the market’s caution ahead of the GST changes.
Tata and Mahindra EV Show MoM Strength
The markets were brighter for the Tata Harrier and its EV counterpart, which saw sales improve strongly with a 39.31% MoM growth to 3,087 units. The Tata Safari also witnessed a 19.98% MoM increase to 1,489 units, showing strong demand ahead of the festive season. Interestingly, the Mahindra XEV 9e, a relatively new electric entrant, surpassed the sales of both the Tata Safari and Hyundai Alcazar, confirming a growing interest in premium electric SUVs.
Steepest Declines and Market Struggle
Several premium models faced a significant downturn in August. The MG Hector/Plus saw a hefty 79.11% YoY drop to just 379 units. The Jeep Compass followed, with sales down by 65.36% YoY to only 97 units. Other models that faced significantly lower sales include the Hyundai Tucson and Volkswagen Tiguan, indicating that customer deferment was highest in the higher-priced, aspirational segment.
