McLaren first SUV Confirmed for 2028 Debut with Hybrid V8

McLaren has spent years brushing off questions about whether it would ever build an SUV. Now, the supercar maker has finally given in, announcing plans for its debut family hauler. The McLaren first SUV is officially happening, quietly shown to dealers during a recent global meeting, with the company targeting a 2028 release date.

This won’t be a half-hearted attempt to cash in on a trend. Internally named P47, the vehicle is a clear statement of performance intention: it will be a five-seat hybrid powered by a V8 engine, designed to drive like a true McLaren even if it is taller and heavier than anything the brand has built before.

Here is a look at the P47 and the aggressive product plan leading up to its arrival.

The Product Roadmap to 2030

The SUV is just one piece of a much more aggressive roadmap McLaren shared with its dealers. New debuts are scheduled annually leading up to the P47’s arrival.

  • 2027 Hybrid V6 Coupe: A successor to the mid-engine lineup is slated for 2027, featuring a V6 hybrid powertrain that is expected to make close to 800 horsepower.
  • 750S Final Edition: Also scheduled for 2027 is a final, highly track-focused sendoff for the current 750S, which is one of McLaren’s last purely combustion-powered models.

This roadmap confirms that the company’s near future revolves heavily around hybrid technology as emissions regulations tighten globally.

Still No Electric Supercar

While the McLaren first SUV will be a hybrid, a full EV supercar remains off the roadmap for now. CEO Nick Collins confirmed that while the company is actively working on the technology, McLaren will not move forward with an all-electric supercar until battery advancements can meet the brand’s core demands for low weight, high sustained power, and thermal excellence.

For now, the McLaren first SUV represents the brand’s willingness to evolve, showing that even a brand built on supercar purity can adapt to the market without compromising its identity.
