Maruti Suzuki Fronx Flex Fuel Makes Global Debut

Maruti Suzuki has officially unveiled the Fronx Flex Fuel variant at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, marking a major step in India’s green mobility future. This new variant is designed to run on ethanol-blended fuels, making it one of the first four-wheeler Flex Fuel vehicles showcased for India.
Capable of Running on E85 Fuel

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx Flex Fuel is engineered to cleanly combust fuel blends with up to 85% ethanol content (E85). This future-ready design aligns with India’s ethanol adoption roadmap, where fuel blending is gradually increasing from the current E20 grade (20% ethanol) towards higher levels.
Unlike conventional petrol models, the Fronx FFV (Flex Fuel Vehicle) features updated fuel storage, supply, and injection systems. A more advanced ECU can automatically detect ethanol content and adjust engine parameters for optimum performance, efficiency, and clean emissions.
Engine & Technical Updates

The concept showcased in Japan is based on the standard Fronx with a 1.5L K15 petrol engine. However, to handle ethanol-rich fuels, the engine components, injectors, and tank have been modified for compatibility with E20–E85 blends.
In India, the production-spec version could either retain this 1.5L unit or shift to the Z12 engine to maintain sub-4m tax benefits.
Why Flex Fuel Matters

Flex Fuel vehicles like the Maruti Suzuki Fronx Flex Fuel provide a sustainable bridge between petrol and electric mobility. Unlike EVs, they don’t require new infrastructure, while still reducing dependency on fossil fuels. India, with abundant bio-waste resources, has strong potential for ethanol production.
Maruti Suzuki is betting big on Flex Fuel as the next breakthrough, after successfully leading CNG and hybrid adoption in India.
India Launch Timeline
The Fronx Flex Fuel is expected to launch in India by 2026. If priced competitively, it could become one of the first mainstream Flex Fuel SUVs in the country. This move will also give Maruti Suzuki a head start over rivals in the alternative fuel space.
