Liam Lawson Civic Type R Rally XP Test Highlights FWD Rally Performance

Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson made an unusual detour recently when he jumped behind the wheel of a Honda Civic Type R Rally XP. As the name implies, this Civic Type R is built for rally stages, a world far from Lawson’s usual downforce-heavy, open-wheel cars. The Liam Lawson Civic Type R Rally XP test was a successful demonstration of Honda Racing Corporation’s (HRC) commitment to the American Rally Association (ARA) 2WD class.

Lawson, who drives for the Honda-powered Racing Bulls F1 team, handled the rally machine impressively, carving through corners and taking jumps without drama, despite the car retaining its signature front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout.

Here is a closer look at the key upgrades that turn the 315 hp hot hatch into a dirt machine.

The FWD Rally Machine

The Civic Type R Rally XP starts as an FL5-generation production model, retaining its core powertrain—a 315 hp turbocharged inline-four VTEC engine paired with a six-speed manual. The transformation focuses on durability and control on rough terrain.

The aggressive appearance is completed by a stripped-out interior, a safety-compliant roll cage, racing seats, and specialized Hoosier tires wrapped around white Speedline wheels.

Lawson’s Connection

Lawson’s rally cameo came through his place in the Honda family via Racing Bulls. Although his team switches to Ford power next year, Lawson’s demonstrated ability to adapt from the high-grip F1 world to the low-grip rally environment highlights the car’s balanced, forgiving nature.

HRC has stated that the Liam Lawson Civic Type R Rally XP is still street-legal and is being evaluated for future programs. While pricing and production plans haven’t been announced, its extensive upgrades mean it will certainly cost significantly more than the stock $45,000 Civic Type R.
