Hyundai Launches a New Urban Mobility Alliance for Smart Cities

Hyundai Motor Group has officially launched its “Next Urban Mobility Alliance” (NUMA), a new initiative designed to shape the future of transportation in cities. This public-private partnership brings together leaders from government, industry, and academia in South Korea to create a cloud-based mobility ecosystem powered by AI and autonomous driving technology. The main goal of NUMA is to provide more transportation options, especially for people with physical limitations.

A Three-Phase Plan

The alliance is centered around a three-phase roadmap to transform city transportation. It will start by using AI to improve local transport systems. Next, it will introduce and expand autonomous mobility-as-a-service. Finally, the plan is to use AI to support the rollout of smart city technology, connecting everything from cars to urban infrastructure. The alliance currently has 31 participating organizations, including Kia Corp., various government ministries, and research institutions.

Leaders Weigh In

Chang Song, the head of Hyundai’s advanced vehicle platform division, said that AI and autonomous driving will “reshape our everyday life” and that Hyundai is committed to using this technology to create “inclusive mobility.” Hee-up Kang, Vice Minister for Transport in South Korea, added that mobility is now an “essential service” and that he is confident that the collaboration between the public and private sectors will create a more “equitable transportation environment.”

Hyundai’s Broader Mobility Vision

This new alliance is part of Hyundai’s larger vision for the future. The company is also working on other projects like “Shucle,” an on-demand, AI-powered mobility platform with dynamic routing, and the “Autonomous Vehicle Foundry,” which supplies self-driving technology to partners like Uber. By working with a wide range of partners, Hyundai is looking to not only redefine mobility but also to address the policy challenges that could slow down the adoption of these new technologies.
