Honda Confirms First EV for India, Launching in FY27
Honda Cars India has officially confirmed its plans to enter the electric vehicle (EV) market. Kunal Behl, the company’s VP of Sales & Marketing, has stated that Honda’s first electric model will launch in India during the financial year 2027, which is between April 2026 and March 2027. This announcement puts an end to speculation and signals a new direction for the brand, which has, until now, focused primarily on strong hybrid models in the Indian market.

A Fresh Take on EVs
Contrary to earlier rumors, the first Honda EV will not be based on the popular Elevate SUV. Instead, Honda will take a different approach by launching a completely new model with a fresh nameplate. The company’s President and CEO, Takashi Nakajima, confirmed that the EV is under development and is likely to be a midsize SUV. This new strategy sets Honda apart from other brands that have opted to create electric versions of their existing gasoline-powered cars.
Building the Infrastructure
Honda understands that a successful EV launch requires more than just a great car. The company is already working to establish the necessary charging infrastructure across India. It has begun equipping its dealerships with fast-charging DC chargers to ensure that customers have a reliable network for quick power-ups. This move is a direct response to customer concerns about range anxiety and shows Honda’s commitment to providing a seamless EV ownership experience.
Looking to the Future
The upcoming Honda EV is set to compete with key rivals like the Hyundai Creta EV, MG ZS EV, and Maruti e-Vitara. In addition to its first electric vehicle, Honda is also working on the next-generation City sedan, which is expected to be unveiled in 2028. The new City will be built on a highly localized platform, making it compatible with hybrid powertrains and allowing for a more aggressive price range of Rs 15-25 lakh (ex-showroom).
