Honda Unveils Two New EVs at Japan Mobility Show: Affordable Alpha SUV and Fun-to-Drive Super-ONE Hot Hatch

Honda has put a firm stamp on its electric future by revealing two near-production battery-electric models at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show (JMS). The vehicles signal Honda’s intent to accelerate its EV program with “homegrown” packages built under the “Thin, Light and Wise” development philosophy. The duo includes the entry-level Honda 0 α (Alpha) SUV, primarily targeting Japan and India, and the highly unique Super-ONE minicar, a sporty hatchback designed to “pursue the ‘fun of driving'” with features like a Boost Mode and simulated 7-speed shifts. Unfortunately for enthusiasts in North America, neither model is currently scheduled for U.S. showrooms, though executives suggest modified versions could arrive later.

Honda 0 α (Alpha) SUV: The Affordable Gateway EV

The Alpha concept is designed to be the accessible entry point to Honda’s new generation of electric vehicles.

  • Series Position: The 0 α (Alpha) is set to become the third entry into Honda’s new 0 Series EV family, following the 0 Saloon and 0 SUV.
  • Design Philosophy: It picks up on the “Thin, Light and Wise” design language, featuring a sleek, low-height profile achieved by maximizing design potential from a “thin” dedicated EV platform.
  • Aesthetics: The concept has a steeply raked windshield, swept roofline, and reverse-angle backlight, with futuristic touches like pixelated LED headlamps and wraparound taillights.
  • Target Market & Launch: The production model is scheduled to go on sale globally, mainly in Japan and India, starting in 2027. India will be its primary initial production hub and main market.
  • Affordability: The 0 α is positioned as an affordable entry to the 0 Series, designed to rival models like the Maruti e-Vitara and Hyundai Creta EV in India.

Honda Super-ONE: Fun-to-Drive Electric Hot Hatch

The Super-ONE is Honda’s response to the demand for small, engaging EVs, a segment currently underserved.

  • Concept: It adopts an even smaller footprint than the 0 Series and is positioned as a sort of all-electric “hot hatch”. It was previewed by the Super EV Concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
  • Simulated Driving Experience: The core innovation is its focus on driver fun:
    • Boost Mode: A button-operated electric Boost Mode increases power output to unleash full performance potential.
    • Simulated Shifts: It synchronizes the Boost Mode with a simulated 7-speed transmission and an Active Sound Control system to generate powerful engine sound and a sharp gearshift feel, mimicking a traditional multi-gear transmission.
  • Design: The production model is described as “sporty, unique and agile,” building on the platform of the N-ONE e electric kei car.
  • Target Markets: Production begins in Japan next year, followed by “other regions with strong demand for compact EVs,” potentially including the UK.

North American Exclusion and Future Possibilities

Despite the excitement, immediate North American availability is highly unlikely for both models.

  • U.S. Too Small: Honda executives stated the Super-ONE is “too small for the U.S.” and the 0 α is “absolutely not for the North American market” in its current form.
  • Joint Venture Context: Honda’s current U.S. EV offerings (Prologue, ZDX) came from a joint venture with GM, and the ZDX’s production has been halted due to weak sales.
  • Future Potential: Honda will still “consider” using the Alpha model as a “possible” affordable EV for the States under the 0 Series banner, and the Super-ONE’s performance focus may influence future, larger US-aimed models.

Final Thoughts

Honda’s dual debut of the 0 α SUV and Super-ONE minicar at JMS is a definitive declaration that the brand is accelerating its commitment to electrification with “homegrown” and highly differentiated products. While the sensible Alpha targets emerging mass markets like India, the audacious Super-ONE—with its simulated gear shifts and engine sound—shows Honda’s determination to prove that electric cars can still deliver the core “fun of driving” experience that defines the brand. This strategic push is crucial for Honda as it aims to reposition itself for a cleaner, more electrified future.
