The Honda Odyssey Hybrid US Buyers Still Can’t Get

It’s no secret that there are two vastly different versions of the Honda Odyssey sold right now: the North American model and the slimmer model sold in most Asian markets. But one key difference highlights a massive gap in Honda’s lineup: the Honda Odyssey Hybrid US buyers want and need is already being sold overseas.

The American-market Odyssey remains the only minivan in its class without an electrified option, despite all its rivals—the Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Pacifica, and Kia Carnival—offering one. This is because the Asian-market Odyssey has been hybrid-only since 2023, leaving American buyers without a crucial fuel-efficient choice.

Here is a comparison of the two models and why the U.S. needs an electrified Odyssey now.

Specs: Power vs. Efficiency

The two models have followed different evolutionary paths, leading to vastly different powertrains. The Asian model sacrifices brute power for class-leading efficiency.

The 181 horsepower output of the Asian hybrid uses the same hardware as the Accord, Civic, and CR-V Hybrid. While this output is insufficient to satisfy American tastes—especially when comparing it to the current 280 hp V6—it demonstrates that the technology is ready.

A Glaring Need in the Minivan Market

The absence of the Honda Odyssey Hybrid US sales floor is becoming a massive competitive disadvantage. Toyota has gone all-in, making the Sienna hybrid-only (with AWD available), and both the Pacifica and Carnival offer electrified trims.

This highlights the need for a thorough redesign of the North American Odyssey, which is still based on the one we first saw all the way back in 2018.

The Future of the Odyssey

While the current model will soldier on without a hybrid option, there is a glimmer of hope. Honda is reportedly working on a new generation of V6 engines that can be mated to its e:HEV hybrid technology.

Should the next Odyssey, expected around 2029, receive this V6 hybrid setup, it would be the only six-cylinder hybrid in its class—a unique selling point that could quickly make up for the years Honda spent lagging in the segment.
