Honda Civic Wheel Recall: Over 400,000 Honda Civics At Risk of Wheels Falling Off

The Honda Civic wheel recall recently announced by American Honda has put owners of 2016–2021 models on high alert, as a serious defect in a limited number of accessory wheels could cause the wheel to detach from the vehicle, “increasing the risk of a crash or injury”. This Honda Civic wheel recall (NHTSA campaign 25V-752) stems from improperly manufactured and installed “steel lug inserts” on accessory wheels, a critical issue for a vehicle’s basic safety.

Recall Focused on Accessory Wheel Steel Lug Inserts

The Honda Civic wheel recall is specific to accessory wheels that may have been purchased with the car or installed after the fact, but the population of potentially affected vehicles is vast.

  • Affected Vehicles: Approximately 406,000 Honda Civics (2016–2021 model years).
  • Affected Parts: The recall focuses on 3,276 units of specific aluminum accessory wheels.
  • The Defect: According to Honda, “Due to a manufacturing process error by a supplier, the steel lug seat inserts… may not have been installed (pressed) into the nut seating surface”.
  • The Danger: During normal operation, the seating surface can deform, causing the wheel nuts to loosen and detach, which could result in the wheel separating from the vehicle.
  • The Fix: Owners of vehicles identified in this Honda Civic wheel recall are asked to visit an authorized dealer. The dealer will inspect the accessory wheels and, if the defect is found, replace them free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed starting December 23, 2025.

Wheel Detachment Issues: Not Just a Honda Problem

While the Honda Civic wheel recall is alarming, Honda isn’t the only automaker to face this critical safety hazard. Several other major brands have issued similar recalls in recent years.

  • Rivian (2022): Recalled 12,000 R1T and R1S vehicles due to an improperly tightened fastener that could cause wheel detachment.
  • Toyota (2022): The brand’s first EV, the bZ4X, had a controversial recall affecting 2,700 units due to a “hub bolt” problem that could cause the wheels to fall off.
  • Ford (2023): Recalled 1,434 units of the Ranger and Bronco due to lug nuts on the driver’s side not being properly tightened, leading to a risk of detached wheels.

Final Thoughts

This Honda Civic wheel recall highlights a significant manufacturing flaw that could have severe consequences on the road. While any recall should be taken seriously, one that involves an “essential vehicle part that can detach or fall off completely during use is a serious safety hazard”. Owners of 2016–2021 Civics, particularly those who purchased accessory wheels, should be vigilant in checking for notification letters and contacting their dealer for an inspection.
