GM Recalls Just 12 Diesel SUVs Over Fuel Tank Mix-Up
General Motors (GM) has issued a recall for a very small number of its diesel SUVs—just 12 units—due to a potential fuel tank leak risk. The recall affects select GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade, and Chevrolet Tahoe models that were mistakenly fitted with incorrect fuel tanks during dealership service. The incorrectly installed tanks are missing key safety components, which could lead to a fuel leak in a serious collision, increasing the risk of fire.
The Cause: A Parts Ordering Flaw
The root cause of the recall was a flaw in GM’s parts ordering system. This system error led dealerships to install the wrong-sized fuel tanks during routine service visits. The incorrect tanks lack specific vent tubes that are part of the original design, which is a key safety component. The issue was first discovered in June 2025 by a Chevrolet dealer, who noticed that a replacement tank didn’t match the original.
Affected Vehicles
The recall is a preventative measure, as no incidents or fuel leaks have been reported to date. It specifically affects only those vehicles that received a fuel tank replacement at a dealership.
Here is a list of the models and years affected by the recall:
Brand | Model | Model Years Affected |
GMC | Yukon (diesel) | 2022, 2024 |
Cadillac | Escalade (diesel) | 2021 |
Chevrolet | Tahoe (diesel) | 2021, 2023-2024 |
What Owners Need to Do
GM will begin mailing official recall notices to affected owners starting November 3, 2025. Owners are advised to schedule an inspection at an authorized GM dealership as soon as they receive the notice. The incorrect fuel tanks will be replaced with the correct, original-spec units completely free of charge. This proactive approach by GM, though it comes after a separate recall of 600,000 vehicles earlier in the year, shows a commitment to customer safety.
