Ford F-150 Lightning EREV 700 Mile Range: The Future of Trucks
The rumors have been confirmed, and it marks the end of an era—and the beginning of a new one. Ford has officially announced that production of the current all-electric F-150 Lightning will end this year. However, the nameplate isn’t dying. Instead, it is being reborn as a vehicle that solves the biggest problem with electric trucks. Enter the Ford F-150 Lightning EREV 700 mile range pickup.

Why Ford Killed the All-Electric Lightning
The original Lightning launched with massive hype, but cooling demand for pure EVs and heavy financial losses forced Ford to rethink its strategy. Buyers loved the electric torque, but they hated the range anxiety—especially when towing.
To fix this, Ford is pivoting to an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). This new strategy keeps the electric driving experience but adds a gas-powered generator to keep the battery charged on long hauls.

How the EREV System Works
Unlike a standard hybrid where the gas engine drives the wheels, the Ford F-150 Lightning EREV 700 mile range truck uses its gas engine only as a generator.
- Electric Drive: The wheels are powered 100% by electric motors.
- Onboard Generator: A high-power generator kicks in to recharge the battery when needed.
- Result: You get the instant torque and quiet ride of an EV, but with the unlimited flexibility of a gas truck.
Doug Field, Ford’s chief EV officer, promises the new truck will be revolutionary: “It delivers everything Lightning customers love… But with a high-power generator enabling an estimated range of 700+ miles, it tows like a locomotive.”

The Pickup EV Market is Struggling
Ford isn’t the only automaker realizing that pure electric trucks are a tough sell. Sales data from Q3 2025 shows that while the Lightning was leading, the numbers for the segment are still modest compared to gas trucks.
| Truck Model | Q3 2025 Sales | Status |
| Ford F-150 Lightning | 23,034 | Discontinued (shifting to EREV) |
| Tesla Cybertruck | 16,097 | Slowing momentum |
| Chevrolet Silverado EV | 9,379 (YTD) | Modest sales |
| GMC Sierra EV | 6,147 (YTD) | Niche volume |
Stellantis has made a similar move, dropping plans for a fully electric Ram 1500 to focus on a range-extended version.

When Can You Buy It?
The new Ford F-150 Lightning EREV 700 mile range truck will be built at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn. While specific release dates are still being finalized, reports suggest it will arrive sooner than the previously expected 2028 window.
For truck owners who tow heavy loads across the country, this might finally be the electric truck that actually makes sense.
