EV Share in Total Car Sales Jumps to 5% in India – Doubles in Just One Year
Electric vehicle adoption is accelerating faster than ever in India. As per the latest data, the EV share in total car sales has doubled within a year, rising from 2.6% in FY2024-25 to around 5% at the end of FY2025. This marks a crucial turning point for the Indian auto industry as more buyers embrace EVs across segments.

Sales Surge in FY2025-26
Between April and September 2025, 91,726 EV units were sold in India. To put that into perspective, this is already about 86% of the total EV sales (1.1 lakh units) recorded in the entire previous fiscal.
According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), EV sales grew by 108% year-on-year in the first half of FY2026, compared to just 14,172 units during the same period last year.
Tata Motors Leads the Charge
Tata Motors continues to dominate the Indian EV market. The company registered a 59% YoY growth with EVs now accounting for 17% of its total sales by the end of Q2 FY2026. Models like the Nexon EV and Tiago EV remain popular choices for mass-market buyers.
MG Motor, Mercedes, and BMW Push Premium EV Adoption
JSW MG Motor India has also seen rapid adoption, with EVs contributing 80% of the company’s total sales. According to MD Anurag Mehrotra, EVs are expected to cross a 7% industry market share by the end of 2025.
Luxury carmakers are also driving the trend. Mercedes-Benz reported a 10% growth in EV sales, while BMW posted record numbers with 2,509 EVs sold in Jan–Sep 2025, representing a staggering 249% YoY growth.
