Someone Finally Built the BMW Z4 Coupe that enthusiasts always wanted but BMW chose not to produce. The custom creation, dubbed the “BMW Zupra” by its builder, Mario (@mysupraadventures), merges the front fascia of a BMW Z4 onto the coupe body of a Toyota GR Supra. Unveiled at the SEMA Show, this one-off vehicle represents a masterful blend of the shared platform’s DNA, proving that even though the two cars are siblings under the skin, successfully grafting the Z4’s face onto the Supra was anything but simple, requiring extensive 3D scanning, customization, and over $12,000 worth of BMW OEM parts.

Grafting A Z4’s Face Onto A Supra Is Not Easy

Despite sharing the CLAR platform, the bodies of the Supra and Z4 are structurally and aesthetically different, making the swap highly complex.

  • Platform Sharing: The Toyota GR Supra and BMW Z4 share the G29 platform (CLAR architecture), which underpins much of their mechanical and internal components (like the B58 engine).
  • The Challenge: Mario used OEM Z4 parts, including the bumper, crash bar, hood, and headlights. However, the Supra’s body panels required significant modification because the Supra’s hood extends over a large portion of the front fender, clashing with the Z4’s design.
  • The Solution: The solution involved 3D scanning the front of the car and extensively customizing the hood and fenders, grafting elements of both cars into unique individual pieces.
  • Unique Touches: The build integrates functional details, including a custom hood vent following the Z4’s lower fender vents, a panel deleting the Supra’s fake side intake vents, EVS Tuning side skirts, and a custom rear diffuser element for the bumper.

A Masterful Interior and Performance Mashup

The customization extends beyond the front end, with the interior and performance receiving M-inspired upgrades.

  • Interior Upgrades: Mario enhanced the already BMW-heavy interior with Recaro Art Edition seats (Recaros were optional equipment on E-Series Bimmers), M side sill plates, and a custom G8X (M3/M4) LCI carbon fiber-adorned steering wheel.
  • Exterior Finish: The “BMW Zupra” features a Seibon carbon fiber rear hatch and a double-bubble carbon fiber roof. Aftermarket taillights with laser-style DRLs (like an M4 CSL) were fitted.
  • Performance Elements: The car rides on BBS LM-R wheels and features M-branded brake calipers. A Meisterschaft SuperGT quad-exit exhaust system was added to enhance the B58’s sound.
  • Engine Bay: The B58 engine bay was detailed with a carbon fiber strut brace and engine cover.

Final Thoughts: The Z4 Coupe That Should Have Been

The BMW Z4 Coupe was never produced by BMW, possibly to avoid cannibalizing sales of the GR Supra coupe. Mario’s incredible effort provides a tangible glimpse of what a G29 Z4 coupe—or “Clownshoe”—would have looked like. The seamlessly executed modifications, which “look as good as OEM,” prove that the demand for a fixed-roof version of the Z4 exists. While the custom nature of the build makes it a singular entity, it stands as a unique achievement in automotive customization, blending the best aesthetic elements of both German and Japanese siblings.
