BMW M Boss Reveals Street-Legal M2 Track Package – It’s Wild!

If you thought the current BMW M2 was already a capable track toy, BMW M boss Frank van Meel has some news that might make you reconsider your build. In a recent interview, the CEO confirmed that a hardcore, street-legal BMW M2 Track Package is officially on the way. This isn’t just a few cosmetic carbon bits; it’s a comprehensive retrofit kit designed to turn the baby M car into a serious circuit weapon. But here’s the catch: you have to buy the whole thing.

A “Hardcore” Retrofit for the Track

Speaking at the BMW M Festival in Chengdu, China, Frank van Meel dropped the details we’ve been waiting for since spy shots of a winged M2 surfaced earlier this year.

Unlike the upcoming M2 CS, which is a factory-built special edition, this BMW M2 Track Package is a retrofit option. That means current and future M2 owners can purchase it through dealers starting next year to transform their cars.

“We wanted to make a package specifically for the track, but still [keep it] street-legal,” van Meel explained. “You can keep your number plate on, but it’s a hardcore package for track use.”

The goal is simple: create a car that you can drive to the Nürburgring, set a blistering lap time, and then drive home—all without a trailer.

Aero That Means Business

The most obvious changes are visual, but they are all functional. The package includes a significantly deeper front splitter and aggressive winglets that van Meel notes are familiar from the brand’s DTM race cars.

The pièce de résistance, however, is the massive rear wing. Featuring an integrated third brake light, this fixed wing is designed to generate serious downforce, planting the rear axle at high speeds. While the prototype was partially camouflaged, van Meel also hinted at a unique hood design, though he remained tight-lipped on the specifics.

Innovative Suspension & Sticky Rubber

While the aero grabs the headlines, the suspension is where the lap time magic happens. Van Meel confirmed the package features a new, “innovative coilover suspension” setup.

Crucially, this isn’t the same M Performance coilover kit you can currently buy from the catalog. It’s a track-specific development engineered expressly for this package. To make the most of that new suspension, the car rides on ultra-sticky Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires, providing the mechanical grip needed to shave seconds off your lap times.

Why No Power Bump?

If you were hoping for 600 horsepower, you might be disappointed. The BMW M2 Track Package is not expected to touch the engine. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six will likely remain at its stock output of 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque.

Why? It’s all about hierarchy. BMW is preparing to launch the M2 CS, which will boast a factory power bump to 523 hp. By keeping the Track Package focused on chassis and aero, BMW avoids stepping on the toes of its own halo model while offering enthusiasts a “chassis-first” tuning option.

Conclusion

The BMW M2 Track Package looks like the perfect middle ground for serious drivers. It bridges the gap between the standard M2 and the elusive, expensive M2 CS. By forcing customers to buy the components as a complete set, BMW ensures the aero, suspension, and tires work in perfect harmony—something a piecemeal build can rarely claim.

We expect full pricing and availability details to drop in 2026. Until then, start saving your tire budget.
