Biogas-powered Maruti Victoris-Introduction
At the Japan Mobility Show 2025, Suzuki took the wraps off a unique version of the Victoris SUV that runs on compressed biogas (CBG) instead of conventional fuels. While the Victoris has been sold in India with petrol and CNG powertrains, this new biogas-powered variant highlights Suzuki’s vision of sustainable mobility.
What Makes It Special?
The new Maruti Victoris CBG has been adapted from the brand’s CNG platform but tuned to operate on methane sourced from organic waste. Unlike CNG, which is derived from fossil fuels, compressed biogas comes from renewable sources, offering a much lower carbon footprint.
To accommodate the change, the SUV now carries dual cylinders positioned under the floor, freeing up boot space that is usually sacrificed in CNG models.
Dimensions and Design
The Victoris CBG retains the same SUV proportions:
- Length: 4,360 mm
- Width: 1,795 mm
- Height: 1,655 mm
Visually, it mirrors the standard Victoris design while integrating the eco-friendly fuel system beneath.
Why Biogas Over CNG?
While CNG and CBG share similar chemical compositions, the key difference lies in sustainability. CBG is generated from organic waste such as agricultural residue, cattle manure, and food waste. This makes it renewable, locally available, and eco-friendly.
Suzuki has been developing this technology since 2022, and the unveiling of the Victoris CBG marks a milestone. For India, this innovation could be especially impactful as the country produces massive amounts of agricultural and organic waste suitable for conversion into biogas.
Maruti Suzuki’s Biogas Push in India
Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki is already preparing the ground for such models in India. The company has set up a biogas plant at its Manesar facility, which has been operational since 2024. The facility is not only a proof of concept but also a step toward integrating renewable energy into the company’s manufacturing ecosystem.
