Bentley Pushes Back EV Plans, Gas Engines Live On Into the 2030s

Bentley has joined Porsche in a strategic shift, confirming that its internal combustion engine (ICE) models will continue to be offered for years to come. The brand, under its new CEO, Frank-Steffen Walliser, will extend the life of popular models like the Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Bentayga well into the 2030s. This decision is a response to uneven demand for electric vehicles (EVs) across different markets and the high costs of scaling electrification.

Extending the Life of the ICE Engine

Originally, Bentley had a plan to go fully electric by 2030, a target that was later moved to 2035. Now, the company has confirmed that it will offer traditional engines and plug-in hybrids for the foreseeable future. This move is a recognition that many Bentley buyers are not yet ready to embrace full electrification. The company will continue to refine its ICE technology while gradually electrifying its lineup, ensuring that it meets the “entire range of customer requirements.”

Balancing Tradition with a Modern Look

Bentley has always been about a delicate balance of tradition and innovation. The company’s focus on bold exclusivity and craftsmanship is why extending the life of its ICE models makes so much sense. Bentley buyers still want visceral engines paired with bespoke artistry, such as the company’s stunning $68,000 paint fade, an intricate “Ombré” finish that takes nearly 60 hours to complete. This blending of classic power with modern craftsmanship is a key part of the brand’s identity.

The Road Ahead

The decision to extend the life of ICE models gives Bentley the time it needs to refine its EV technology, manage costs, and match demand in key markets like the U.S., China, and the Middle East. While regulators may push for aggressive EV adoption, Bentley, like Porsche, is betting that luxury buyers want choice. By keeping the ICE alive alongside new EVs, the brand can deliver both tradition and technology, even if the road to an all-electric future takes a little longer.
