Another Blow for Alfa Romeo: Over 62,000 Giulias and Stelvios Recalled for Faulty Rearview Cameras

Less than a month after its last major recall, Alfa Romeo faces another significant setback, announcing a new recall affecting over 62,000 Giulia and Stelvio models due to faulty rearview camera mirrors. This issue, which violates federal safety standards for rear visibility, impacts models from 2019 through 2025. Coming on the heels of a 50,000-vehicle fuel pump recall last month, this latest announcement means Alfa Romeo has recalled over 116,000 vehicles from just two models in a short period, adding “salt into an already deep and sore wound” for the Italian manufacturer, especially given its recent sales challenges in the U.S. market.

Extensive Model Years Affected, Compounding Recent Issues

The latest recall significantly expands the scope of recent safety concerns for Alfa Romeo.

  • Models and Years: This new recall affects Giulia models built between August 6, 2019, and March 12, 2025, and Stelvio models from August 2, 2019, to March 14, 2025, sold in the U.S. market.
  • Compounding Problems: This follows a September recall for a fuel pump issue affecting over 50,000 vehicles from 2017-2019, bringing the total number of recalled Giulias and Stelvios to over 116,000 in less than a month.
  • Context for Alfa Romeo: For a brand that only returned to the U.S. in 2014 after a 19-year hiatus and has seen dwindling sales in recent years, these consecutive major recalls present a significant challenge to customer confidence and brand perception.

The Issue: Federal Safety Violation and Faulty Components

The root cause of the recall lies in a failure to meet mandated rearview visibility standards.

  • Safety Standard Violation: The issue violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, which dictates that the rearview image must automatically appear in the mirror when reversing and meet specific size and depth of field criteria.
  • Discovery and Investigation: Stellantis, Alfa Romeo’s parent company, launched an investigation on May 14, 2025, after discovering faulty rearview mirrors in affected vehicles.
  • Root Cause: On September 25, it was determined that the issue stems from faulty supplied components, specifically a combination of either a hole in the circuit board of the mirror or a software issue rendering the backup camera inoperative.
  • Brand Impact: While a supplier component issue, Alfa Romeo, as the brand, will bear the brunt of public skepticism regarding vehicle quality and reliability.

Owner Notification and Remediation

Alfa Romeo and Stellantis are outlining a clear process for affected owners.

  • Notification Timeline: Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by November 25.
  • Free Repairs: All necessary parts and software fixes will be provided free of charge at authorized Alfa Romeo dealerships.
  • VIN Check: Owners can check if their vehicle’s VIN is affected starting October 14 on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.

Final Thoughts

This latest recall is a significant hurdle for Alfa Romeo as it strives to re-establish its presence in the competitive U.S. luxury market. Ensuring prompt and effective resolution of these safety concerns will be critical for the brand to rebuild trust and demonstrate its commitment to quality and customer safety. The continuous flow of recalls for its core models raises questions about manufacturing oversight and component quality, which Alfa Romeo will need to address comprehensively to secure its long-term success.
