The issue was first identified during an end-of-line review at Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin on July 13, 2025, where a Model Y’s reverse light failed during testing.

- Voluntary Recall: On September 24, Tesla initiated a voluntary recall for affected vehicles built between February 6 and July 26, 2025.
- Affected Vehicles: Approximately 260 Model Y units are suspected to have the faulty reverse lights.
The Nature of the Fault and the Fix
The cause of the malfunction appears to be surprisingly simple for a company known for its advanced technology.
- Simple Cause: The issue is believed to stem from a connector not seating correctly in the rear reversing lights and fascia harness.
- Manual Repair Required: Unlike many modern Tesla issues that can be resolved via over-the-air (OTA) software updates, this problem necessitates a traditional hardware replacement.
- Quick Fix: Owners can take their Model Y to a local Tesla service center for inspection and replacement. Tesla estimates the identification and repair process will take approximately 20 minutes.
- Public Responsibility: Despite the simplicity of the fix, Tesla bears the public responsibility for this oversight, especially for a foundational safety feature on a vehicle otherwise celebrated for its advanced performance, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds and a 372-mile range.
