Hyundai India Slides to 4th Spot in H1 FY26 as Maruti Suzuki Dominates

The Indian passenger vehicle market has seen a dramatic reshuffle in the first half of FY26 (April–September 2025). Hyundai India, long considered the strongest challenger to Maruti Suzuki, has now slipped to fourth place in overall sales. This marks the first time in years that Hyundai has lost its grip on the number two spot, with Mahindra and Tata Motors overtaking the Korean brand.

H1 FY26 Sales Performance – Market Shake-Up

Rank 4 edited

Maruti Suzuki remains the undisputed leader, selling over 8.4 lakh units, while Hyundai India dropped to 2.71 lakh units — a decline of 9.1% YoY.

Hyundai India’s Challenges – Over-Reliance on SUVs

Hyundai India’s troubles stem from over-reliance on the Creta and Venue. In September 2025, the Creta alone contributed 18,861 units, while the Venue added 11,484 units. However, other models like the i10 Nios, i20, Aura, Exter, Verna, Alcazar, Tucson, and Ioniq 5 saw limited traction. Analysts point out that Hyundai’s lack of fresh products and over-dependence on two SUVs have left it vulnerable in a rapidly evolving market.

Mahindra’s Broad-Based Growth

Mahindra’s rise contrasts sharply with Hyundai’s stagnation. Instead of depending on one superstar product, Mahindra’s portfolio has strong performers across the board: XUV 3XO, Thar, Thar Roxx, Scorpio/Scorpio-N, and its growing EV lineup (BE 6, XEV 9e). This diverse success has helped Mahindra secure second place, surpassing Hyundai India with 297,570 units.

Tata Motors: Strategic Consistency

Tata Motors continues to show steady growth, edging Hyundai India for the third spot with 277,116 units. Tata’s strategy of offering a balanced SUV range and aggressive EV expansion resonates with urban buyers, helping the company consolidate its position in the competitive landscape.

The Road Ahead for Hyundai India

The fall to fourth place is a wake-up call for Hyundai India. To recover, the automaker needs a wider product portfolio, stronger focus on EVs, and refreshed offerings in hatchbacks and sedans. With Mahindra and Tata continuing their upward march, Hyundai’s ability to innovate and diversify will decide whether it can reclaim its position as Maruti Suzuki’s closest rival.
