VW and Audi Owners Could Get Up to $3,850 Back for Turbo Repairs

Volkswagen and Audi owners across the U.S. and Puerto Rico who have faced costly turbocharger repairs may be in line for significant financial relief. A new class action settlement, Kimball v. Volkswagen Group of America, could provide thousands of drivers with cash reimbursements or extended warranties. This settlement addresses claims that certain VW and Audi models were equipped with turbochargers prone to early failure, often due to wastegate corrosion in the first three generations of the EA888 engine.

Eligible Models and Engine Generations

The settlement covers current and past owners or lessees of a wide range of Volkswagen and Audi models, spanning various model years. Crucially, the issue is linked to the first three generations of the EA888 engine. It’s important to note that the latest generation EA888 engine, found in newer cars like the 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI, is not affected by this particular issue.

Here’s a partial list of affected models:

  • Volkswagen: Arteon (2019-2021), Atlas (2018-2023), Atlas Cross Sport (2020-2023), Beetle (2012-2013), CC (2009-2017), Eos (2009-2016), Golf (2015-2018), Golf GTI (2008-2021), Golf R (2008-2019), Golf Sportwagen and Alltrack (2015-2019), Jetta GLI (2008-2013, 2019-2024), Jetta Sedan (2008-2013), Jetta Sportwagen (2009), Passat (2008-2010), Tiguan (2009-2018).
  • Audi: A3 (2008-2009, 2015-2020), A4 (2009-2014), A5 (2010-2014), A6 (2013-2015), Q3 (2015-2024), Q5 (2011-2014), TT (2011-2012, 2016-2023).

As not every model year is included, the best way for owners to confirm eligibility is to enter their VIN at the official settlement website.

Reimbursement and Warranty Extension Details

For drivers who have already paid for a turbocharger repair, the settlement offers reimbursement. Eligible owners can receive between 40% and 50% of their costs back for one turbocharger repair, with a cap of $3,850 if the work was performed at an unauthorized dealer. Repairs completed at an authorized VW or Audi dealership qualify for the higher 50% reimbursement.

Even for those who haven’t yet incurred repair costs, there’s a benefit. Effective September 15, 2025, warranty extensions will kick in for certain “Generation 3” vehicles. This new coverage provides 50% of parts and labor for turbocharger fixes, extending up to 8.5 years or 85,000 miles from the car’s original in-service date. This offers peace of mind and substantial potential savings for future repairs.

This settlement provides a much-needed reprieve for many owners who have grappled with unexpected turbocharger failures, turning a past headache into a potential financial win.
