Tesla Model Y Deliveries Finally Begins
Tesla has officially started Tesla Model Y Deliveries in India. This marks an important milestone for the electric carmaker in the country. The first batch of cars has been imported from the Shanghai Gigafactory, which is Tesla’s biggest plant for the Model Y. Since launch, Tesla has received around 600 bookings. Currently, the brand has two stores in India – one in Mumbai and the other in Delhi.
Tesla Model Y Deliveries-Why Shanghai Supplies India
The Shanghai Gigafactory plays a key role in Tesla’s global plans. With a production capacity of about six lakh Model Y units each year, it is the largest single plant for this model. Lower costs and easy access to local parts make it the most efficient. This is why cars for India are being sourced from Shanghai. Tesla also builds the Model Y in Germany, California, and Texas, but those plants focus mainly on local demand in their regions.
Tesla’s Sales Target for India
Tesla had set a target of selling about 2,500 Model Y units in India every year. However, bookings so far are only around 600. Experts believe that demand could improve if Tesla expands its presence beyond Mumbai and Delhi. New showrooms, service centers, and better charging access may help the company achieve higher numbers in the coming months.
Expanding the Charging Network
Charging is a major focus for Tesla in India. Owners can charge the Model Y at home with a wall connector that supports Wi-Fi and over-the-air updates. For longer trips, Tesla Superchargers will play a key role. These fast chargers can add up to 275 km of range in just 15 minutes. Globally, Tesla has more than 70,000 Superchargers, making it the largest fast-charging network by a single brand. Bringing this network to India will help build confidence among new buyers.
Price and Variants
In India, Tesla Model Y comes in two versions. The standard rear-wheel drive variant is priced at ₹59.89 lakh, while the long-range version costs ₹67.89 lakh. Customers can also choose the full self-driving feature later, which will be offered through an update for an extra ₹6 lakh. Bookings are open for a non-refundable fee of ₹22,220.
What This Means for India
Tesla’s entry is an exciting moment for India’s EV market. While bookings are still limited, the presence of a global leader like Tesla can push more people to consider electric cars. If Tesla expands quickly and builds its charging network, the Model Y could become a popular choice among premium EV buyers.
