Mercedes-Benz Poised to Expand G-Class Family with New V8 Models

Mercedes-Benz appears ready to significantly expand its iconic G-Class lineup, with new trademark filings hinting at a suite of more powerful and luxurious variants. While a smaller electric G-Wagen is known to be in the pipeline, these new filings suggest a move towards even larger and more potent versions of the beloved off-roader. According to European Intellectual Property Office trademark filings discovered by CarBuzz, Mercedes has registered the names G600, G700, G800, and G900, indicating a potential move to supersede or heavily augment the current G550 and G580 with EQ Technology models.

New G-Wagens: More Power, More Space, More Luxury

The current G550 is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 443 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. The all-electric G580 with EQ Technology offers up to 579 hp and 859 lb-ft of torque, while the AMG G63 boasts 577 hp and 628 lb-ft from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.

The newly trademarked names—G600, G700, G800, and G900—strongly suggest an increase in power, space, or luxury. Some of these designations could even be reserved for future Maybach variants, potentially including a stretched three-row G-Class or even a new G-Class Cabriolet, following the ultra-rare 2018 Maybach G 650 Landaulet. Given the tepid reception for the all-electric G580 with EQ Technology, Mercedes seems to be doubling down on the demand for traditional combustion power, especially in higher-spec models.

V8 Power Looks Likely for Future G-Wagens

The move to expand the G-Class lineup with more powerful variants makes strategic sense. With Mercedes planning to launch a new V8 engine in 2027, and strong customer interest in gasoline-powered G-Wagens (including a highly anticipated “baby G-Class” with combustion power), a V8 engine seems like a natural fit for these higher-spec models. This indicates that Mercedes is listening to its customers and investing in the types of vehicles that continue to attract strong global demand.

While these trademarks are fresh, it typically takes time for product planners to bring such concepts to market. However, a stretched, three-row G-Class with enhanced V8 power and ultra-luxury features seems like an almost guaranteed moneymaker for Mercedes-Benz.
