McLaren Confirms Multi-Seat Model is Coming: The Era of Practical Supercars!

McLaren, the British marque known for its lightweight, performance-focused supercars, is finally acknowledging the need for practicality. Nick Collins, the new CEO, has confirmed that a more diverse portfolio is on the way, which will include a model with “more than two seats.” This is a huge shift for a company that has resisted the SUV trend followed by rivals like Lamborghini and Ferrari, signaling a new business strategy aimed at greater profitability and wider appeal.

A Strategy to Fund Future Supercars

Collins is tasked with optimizing McLaren’s lineup to ensure long-term profitability. While the brand remains committed to its core high-performance track weapons, it cannot survive solely on low-volume, expensive exotics like the 750S. The move to enter “adjacent segments” is designed to generate the necessary financial stability. As seen with Porsche’s Cayenne and Bentley’s Bentayga, high-volume, practical vehicles provide the financial support needed to continue developing aspirational supercars.

What Will It Be? SUV or 2+2?

While Collins did not explicitly confirm an SUV, the evidence strongly points to one. The rival brands’ success with SUVs makes it a wise business decision. However, a coupe-style 2+2 grand tourer is also a possibility. What is certain is that the new vehicle will be a model with “more than two seats” and will be more practical than anything McLaren sells right now.

The Electric and Hybrid Future

The new McLaren model is expected to be electrified. Collins confirmed that the future is a “multi-propulsion” strategy, meaning the lineup will include hybrids alongside pure EVs. McLaren was recently acquired by CYVN and merged with the electric car startup Forseven, giving it access to advanced electric powertrain and platform technologies, including components from Nio, in which CYVN also owns a stake. This merger gives McLaren a key advantage in developing an electrified, high-performance vehicle.
