Acura Ends Production of the All-Electric ZDX SUV
Honda’s luxury brand, Acura, has officially ended production of the ZDX, its first all-electric SUV. In a statement, the company confirmed the discontinuation, citing tough “market conditions for electric vehicles” and a need to adjust its model lineup to better meet consumer needs. This move marks a significant shift in Acura’s electrification strategy, but the brand has confirmed that this is not the end of its electric journey.
A Product of a Honda-GM Partnership
The ZDX was a product of a partnership between Honda and General Motors, built on GM’s Ultium battery technology. While the ZDX was produced in Tennessee, its Honda-badged sibling, the Prologue SUV, was built in Mexico. Despite the ZDX’s discontinuation, Honda has confirmed that production of the Prologue will continue as normal.
Sales Struggle and High Incentives
The decision to end production of the ZDX came after the vehicle struggled to find buyers, even with heavy incentives. In 2024, Acura sold just 7,391 ZDXs in the U.S., with total sales of only around 19,000 units since its launch. Industry data shows that Honda spent an average of more than $21,000 on incentives for each ZDX sold during the second quarter of 2025 alone.
Here is a look at the ZDX’s sales performance:
Period | Sales (U.S.) |
2024 | 7,391 units |
Total since launch | ~19,000 units |
Average incentive per car (Q2 2025) | >$21,000 |
Acura’s New Hybrid Strategy
At a recent press conference, Acura signaled a major pivot in its electrification strategy. The brand’s CEO, Kazuhiro Takizawa, noted that a full electric vehicle lineup is “not realistic” at the moment due to consumer preferences. As a result, Acura is now focusing on a more diversified lineup that will include both all-electric and hybrid-electric vehicles. This flexible approach will allow the company to adapt to the changing market and give customers more choices.
Looking to the Future with the RSX
Despite the ZDX’s discontinuation, Acura is not giving up on EVs. The brand confirmed that it will launch the all-electric Acura RSX crossover in the second half of 2026. The RSX will be produced at a new EV Hub in Ohio. Acura has said that the ZDX played a “valuable role” in its electric journey and that its platform will provide a “foundation” for the upcoming RSX.
