Hyundai’s New A+ Segment EV Confirmed for India

Hyundai has officially announced plans to launch an A+ segment electric SUV in India in 2027. This new micro-SUV, which will be designed specifically for the Indian market, is expected to be priced from around Rs 10 lakh. It will be the first Hyundai EV to be heavily localized in India and will directly compete with the Tata Punch.ev, the only current offering in this segment.

Inspired by the Casper EV, Tailored for India

This new model, rumored to be called the ‘HE1i EV,’ is likely to take design inspiration from the Hyundai Casper EV (known as the Inster in Europe). It may feature similar styling elements like pixel-like headlights and a modern, compact shape. However, Hyundai has confirmed that the final design will be better aligned with the tastes of Indian consumers, ensuring it has its own distinct identity.

Focus on Local Production and Battery Tech

The new EV will be a key part of Hyundai’s strategy to strengthen its position in the Indian market. It is expected to be the first car to use locally produced LFP battery cells from the company’s tie-up with Exide Energy. Reports suggest the battery pack could have a capacity of 35-40 kWh, which should provide a range of over 400 kilometers on a full charge.

The Competition and Market Impact

The arrival of the new Hyundai EV in 2027 will create a direct rivalry with the Tata Punch.ev. It could also be a corporate cousin to the Kia Syros EV, which is scheduled to arrive in early 2026. This new vehicle and Hyundai’s focus on localization signal a major shift towards a more affordable and India-centric EV strategy, moving away from its global-only EV models.
