Hyundai Design Boss Says He’s Had Enough of Light Bars
If you’ve noticed that almost every new car has a full-width light bar, you’re not alone. Hyundai’s design boss, Simon Loasby, has officially said that this trend is “almost at the end of its journey”. Speaking at the reveal of the new Hyundai Concept Three, Loasby admitted that while the design worked at the time for models like the Grandeur and Kona, he has “seen enough” of them. He believes that designers should now focus on creating features that make “logical sense” and “emotional sense” for the customer.

A Unique Design Philosophy
Loasby explained that Hyundai’s design philosophy is all about creating a distinct look for every car. He says the company focuses on having an “80% difference and only a 20% recognizable and familiar” style, which is the opposite of many other automakers. He also pointed out that pixel lighting, a signature feature on the IONIQ electric models, has become a key part of Hyundai’s identity. Loasby even joked that he’s “flattered” that other carmakers, like Fiat, have started to copy their pixel lighting.
