Ford Renault Ampere partnership Will Launch Two New Ford-Branded EVs by 2028
Ford is doubling down on its commitment to the European market with a major new alliance. In a statement released on December 9, Ford announced a “strategic partnership” with the Renault Group to jointly develop two Ford-branded electric vehicles based on Renault’s Ampere platform. This Ford Renault Ampere partnership is billed as the next phase of Ford’s European transformation, aiming to revive its lineup with efficient, affordable electric models.
The Blue Oval will lead the design and driving dynamics of the upcoming models, ensuring they remain “distinctly Ford in spirit.” The first of the two new vehicles is scheduled to arrive in European showrooms in early 2028.

Here is a closer look at the dual strategy: platform sharing for efficiency and a public call for “realistic” EU regulation.
The Partnership Pillars
The collaboration aims to combine the industrial scale and supply base of two major brands to achieve the efficiency needed to compete against growing global rivals, particularly from China.

Ford Calls for “Realistic” EU Emissions Regulations
Alongside the partnership announcement, Ford—through President of Ford Europe Jim Baumbick—issued a direct plea to EU lawmakers. Ford’s broader strategy is designed to navigate Europe’s evolving CO2 emission regulations, but the automaker warned that aggressive targets threaten local investment.
Ford proposed three crucial steps to ensure a successful and consumer-friendly transition to electrification:
- Align Targets with Reality: CO2 targets must align with actual market adoption (currently 16.1% EV share, far below the needed 25% by 2025). Ford wants a realistic and reliable 10-year planning horizon to allow consumers to drive hybrid vehicles for longer.
- Incentivize the Transition: Governments must match manufacturers’ investments with consistent purchase incentives and rapidly expanding charging infrastructure beyond wealthy urban centres.
- Support the Working Economy: Aggressive CO2 targets on commercial vehicles unfairly penalize small and medium-sized businesses, which generate more than 50% of Europe’s GDP, as only 8% of new vans are currently electric.

Ford’s message is clear: they need to enable consumer choice between fully electric and hybrid options to make the transition more affordable and stimulate demand rather than stifle it. The Ford Renault Ampere partnership is an important move to prepare for the electric future, but the company asserts that constructive policy alignment from the EU is equally vital for long-term survival and success.
